Saudi and UAE want to seize Qatar’s wealth, says Sheikh Abdullah

Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani, a member of the Qatari royal family, claimed today that Saudi Arabia and the UAE want to seize Qatar’s wealth.

In a new voice recording released today on several social networking sites, Al-Thani – who is currently receiving medical treatment in Kuwait – has warned against Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Zayed’s, attempts to sabotage Qatar, saying “they want Qatar’s wealth”.

He also said in the audio recording, which was recorded on 15 January, “Due to the pressures on me, my confinement, and inability to return home or join my family, namely my two daughters, I have decided to end my life with the aim of preventing any harm to others”.

Al-Thani calls for forgiveness in his recording and urges the Gulf nations not to fight, saying, “we are one nation”.

Al-Thani arrived in Kuwait on Tuesday after leaving his place of detention in Abu Dhabi, according to Kuwaiti media outlets.

While Abdullah Al-Thani thanked the Saudi Monarch, King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, for his mediation on the issue of allowing Qatari pilgrims entering the country to perform hajj, he described his son as “cunning”.

“The [Gulf] crisis is based on interests and the desire of both Mohammed bin Zayed and Mohammed bin Salman to usurp the wealth and riches of Qatar,” Al-Thani said.

“I urge my fellow Qataris to defend your position, beware of them,” he added. “They may lure you with money to destroy your own country.”

HRW accuses Saudi Arabia of repression despite reforms

Campaign group Human Rights Watch on Thursday accused Saudi Arabia of violating international humanitarian law in Yemen and of stepping up arrests and prosecutions of activists seeking reform or voicing peaceful dissent.

In its World Report 2018, which reviews human rights practices in more than 90 countries, the rights group reported it had documented 87 unlawful attacks by the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen, leading to nearly 1,000 civilian deaths.

Yemen’s internationally recognised government, backed by the coalition and supported by the United States and Britain, is trying to roll back the Iran-aligned Houthi group which controls most of northern Yemen.

The coalition has repeatedly denied allegations of war crimes and says its attacks are directed against its Houthi foes, not civilians.

The government’s communications office did not have an immediate comment on the report when contacted by Reuters.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has rocketed to the pinnacle of power in the kingdom, pushing a reform agenda called Vision 2030 aimed at weaning the country off oil and introducing social changes.

Last week, women were allowed to attend a men’s soccer match in stadiums for the first time. Women-focused motorshows opened in Jeddah and Riyadh this week. A decades-long ban on screening films was lifted in the conservative kingdom this week.

Meanwhile, the New York-based group said, more than a dozen prominent political activists convicted on “vague charges arising from their peaceful activities” were serving lengthy prison sentences.

“Mohammad bin Salman’s well-funded image as a reformist falls flat in the face of Yemen’s humanitarian catastrophe and scores of activists and political dissidents languishing in Saudi prisons on spurious charges,” Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, said.

“Baby steps on women’s rights reforms don’t paper over Saudi Arabia’s systemic abuses.”

(03 DECEMBER 2017)The week ahead: Brexit meeting in focus

The US labor market report next Friday should have lesser importance for once.

Given how solid US economic data has been of late, a Federal Reserve rate hike in December seems highly likely and is almost fully priced by markets.

CIO doesn’t expect major surprises from the policy statements of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and the Bank of Canada (BoC). CIO expects the BoC to strike a slightly more hawkish tone as economic data continues to hold up nicely; it should follow the Fed’s tightening steps. In emerging markets, central banks in Poland, India and Brazil will be meeting. Concerning sterling, special attention should be paid to the meeting between British Prime Minister Theresa May and EU officials in Brussels on Monday. The pound could appreciate further if both sides agree on a “divorce bill” and move Brexit talks to the next stage.

(03 DECEMBER 2017)Thought of the week: Do not go gentle into that good night

For economists, the end of the year is often a gentle wind-down. This is not the case in 2017.

The dullest event is the US Federal Reserve meeting (December 13). The Fed has basically told markets that there will be a 0.25 percent rate increase. Markets, for once, have listened. This is not going to surprise.

The US tax reform soap opera has more potential for drama. Negotiations in the Senate, and between the Senate and the House risk adding uncertainty. A deal is likely to be done, but it may not come until 2018. The Alabama special election for the Senate (December 12) adds to the political noise.

There is the EU heads of government summit (December 14 and 15). This is a key moment in the tedious talks about the UK’s exit. If the summit fails to progress to trade talks, the risks of a “no deal” exit increase. Markets have ignored those risks so far.
